Quarantined Crafts: Bookshelf Makeover

As COVID-19 is as prominent in our lives as ever, Schneller&co. continues to present our customers with entertaining activities to fill up the free time. This week's Quarantine Craft is a bookshelf paint job!! Now let's paint a bookshelf!!

Supplies:

  • A bookshelf of any sort

  • 4 Apple Barrel paints in the shades Pink Polish, Red Apple, Black, and Spring Green

  • White, Rust-Oleum American Accents 2X Ultra Cover, Primer Spray

  • Various paintbrushes, in a variety of forms (all brushes used are from Artist’s Loft)

Step 1: Tape and Primer

To keep black borders around the painting, apply masking tape on all four sides of the piece. For a better application, spray the White, Rust-Oleum American Accents 2X Ultra Cover, Primer Spray onto the bookshelf's top and sides. After thoroughly coating the box, the wood should have a white finish.

Step 2: Side 1

For side 1 of the bookshelf, use shades Pink Polish, Red Apple, and Spring Green. Using Pink Polish, cover the entire side, painting up to 3 coats until fully covered. Once dried, surround the area with small, varying sizes, circles as the cherries with the color Red Apple. To make the stems and connect a pair of cherries, use Spring Green to complete the cherry look.

Step 3: Side 2

To keep with the fruit theme, I chose to add watermelons onto the bookshelf's second side. Using Spring Green, cover the entirety of the side, taking three coats of paint. After the paint has dried, add red triangles with Red Apple around the area. Mixing Black and Spring Green in a 1:4 ratio to make a darker shade of green, paint a line underneath the red triangle's side to create a watermelon's rind. And lastly, using Black, add small dots on the red triangles to develop seeds.

Step 3: the Top

And finally, we have the top of the bookshelf. Blending the two themes, use both Spring Green and Pink Polish as the base coat and as the two colors come towards the middle, blend the paints in to create an ombre effect. Once the base coat is dry, add the fruits used on either side of the bookshelf and add them to either base's sides.

And there you have it!! Once you cleanup the sides, if needed, you have a total bookshelf makeover. Let us at Schneller&co. know if you used these instructions to make your version. We hope you enjoyed this week’s blog post of Quarantine Crafts and wish to see you again. Stay safe, wash your hands, and social distance.
